Menopause friendly workspaces
Women spend more than a third of their lives in peri- or post-menopause and an estimated one in four women has serious symptoms—and this is at the time when many are stepping into senior roles. One in five members of the workforce are affected by menopause, leading to billions of productivity losses. In a large survey done in the US in menopausal women, nearly 40% of women had taken time off due to perimenopause or menopause symptoms; 71% lost more than 40 hours (one full week) of work time and 30% reported losing more than a month of work time altogether. The impact on the economy is therefore substantial.1 Menopause-related symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, mood changes, sleep disturbances, joint aches and cognitive difficulties damage the quality of life for millions of women. A newly published Mayo Clinic study puts numbers on that cost: an estimated $1.8 billion in lost work time per year and $26.6 billion annually when medical expenses are added, in the U.S. alone.
